Monthly Garden Tips-Damping Off

Monthly Garden Tips

Damping Off

Damping off is a term used for sudden seedling death by any of a handful of fungal diseases including several root rots and molds.  Some seedlings look pinched at the base of the stem, others flop over, and some wither away entirely.  Prevention is the best cure.  To reduce or eliminate damping off on young seedlings, do not overwater.  Increase air circulation by not overcrowding the seedlings and fan them occasionally to promote air movement.   The clear plastic dome that comes with most seed starting trays should be removed once seedlings begin to sprout as it both hampers air flow and increases the moisture around the seedlings.  Remember that cooler temperatures are better than warmer ones and do not over fertilize.  Young seedlings are damaged by too much fertilizer.  Watering or misting seedlings with an antifungal solution can also help protect your seedlings.  One tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide per quart of water is sufficient.  Happy gardening!
